My Daily Rituals with Melanie Emlyn

Melanie Emlyn is a Manual Osteopath in training, a Calgary-based ARYT 500hr Yoga teacher, Certified Nutritional Practitioner & Reiki Master.

Growing up as an athlete, she always had a passion and curiosity for health & wellness. After becoming a Nutritional Practitioner in 2013 she began to understand that being healthy wasn't just about what you put in your body, it was just as important to balance the emotional, spiritual and energetic aspects of yourself. Up until then, she had pursued yoga as injury-prevention and fitness but quickly began to see positive shifts in her mental, emotional and spiritual body.

She began teaching yoga in 2016 but that wasn’t the end of her journey. Plagued with injuries from sports, car accidents and scoliosis, Manual Osteopathic treatment became a monthly ritual to align and support her constantly moving body. Melanie found this style of treatment revolutionary to her healing and is now in the process of becoming one herself at the National Manual Osteopathic College.

Melanie's Instagram is an informative, reflective place for anyone with an interest in yoga and wellness. We're thrilled to feature her on our very first post in an ongoing "My Daily Rituals with..." series.

It's in this space that we'll speak with people who inspire us to get a behind-the-scenes look at how they incorporate ritual and wellness into their every day.

What does your morning routine look like?

It looks like waking up at 8am, morning meditation for 20 minutes. Then I cook a fresh breakfast usually eggs and greens, take my morning supplements and then get dressed and i’m off to treat clients or teach yoga.

How do you take care of yourself?

I work out regularly with weights as well as doing yoga. I meditated regularly. I see a therapist once a month which is always so great and I eat really healthy but also still balanced.

What are you exploring or learning about right now?

I am currently becoming a Manual Osteopath! It’s been a deep dive into the body, the organs, the nervous system and beyond. So fascinating and has helped me a lot as a yoga teacher and as a human being!

What's one thing you do every single day?

Outside of brushing my teeth, I would say snuggling with my cats!

What is your relationship to health and wellbeing?

I have been working in the Health & Wellness industry for over a decade. I grew up as an athlete and learned how important it is to take care of ourselves with proper nutrition and balanced lifestyle. I graduated from The Institute of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 and became a Certified Nutritional Practitioner. I found yoga around the same time and began teaching in 2016.

Health continues to be a HUGE part of my life and something that I am very passionate about sharing with others whether it’s through 1:1 coaching or casual conversations.

How do you like to unwind at night?

This varies for me, sometimes it’s a good movie or show on Netflix, sometimes it’s a nice hot shower and a good book.

What do you cherish most about yoga?

What I cherish most about yoga is that there is no ceiling. There is an endless capacity to learn and grow from this practice which motivates and inspires me daily.

If I could impart some wisdom that’s been a constant part of my own practice, especially over this last year is have COMPASSION. Compassion for yourself and compassion for others. We’re all doing our best and our best varies from day to day. One day we can run no problem and then next we can’t get off the couch. Meeting ourselves where we’re out free from judgement or expectations is the key to living a longer and healthier life.
